Women4Cyber: Progress, Challenges, and the Path to 50/50 by 2050

Today’s meeting centered on an ambitious and vital goal: achieving 50/50 gender representation in cybersecurity by the year 2050. This vision—known as “50/50 by 2050”—aims to close the persistent gender gap in the industry by fostering equal and equitable opportunities, representation, and advancement for women. The discussion focused on the strategies, commitments, and collaborative actions needed to make this vision a reality.

Women4Cyber has already made significant strides, growing to a global network of 88,000 women and providing invaluable support through scholarships, mentorship, and training. This progress is a testament to the dedication of the Women4Cyber Foundation, ECSO, and the European Commission members who champion these efforts.

Despite these achievements, the under representation of women in cybersecurity remains a pressing social issue. True progress toward 50/50 parity requires a strong, supportive community and the celebration of female role models. The recent and ongoing fights for diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) faces challenges and slowdowns. Challenges are not only in quantity of people but particularly in building a robust talent pipeline and closing the persistent skills gap.

In this writers opinion, while many are wary of quotas, the lack of female representation is undeniable. Women in cybersecurity often find themselves isolated in male-dominated environments, having to repeatedly prove their qualifications and fight to be heard. This lack of equity and equality not only affects individuals but also hinders innovation and economic growth across all sector. A solution and change of mentality is needed.

Call to Action: Everyone—individuals, companies, and leaders—must review the Women4Cyber Declaration and commit to its objectives. Challenging the status quo and rejecting complacency are essential steps toward achieving lasting change

True inclusion means creating environments where all individuals can see themselves reflected in all roles including leadership, and feel empowered to contribute confidently.
